Easy hammock 'how tos'

The hammock has been around since the days of Socrates. In fact, one of his students, probably one of his lazier ones, is credited with inventing the now universal symbol of relaxation. But, with all due credit to the ancient Greeks, the hammocks of today have come a long way. Most are now available in a range of styles and with a range of accessories that will help you create the ideal combination of swaying and shade for your relaxation spot.

With the help of just a few easy hammock "how-tos," you should be set for hours of relaxation.

How to choose - The ever-popular classic hammock is hand-woven of either cotton or polyester rope; however, hammocks also are available in colorfast fabrics in a variety of styles. The comfort of all-rope hammocks comes from the ability to contour to the user's body and provide a "floating-on-air" feel. Quilted and other fabric hammocks, though slightly more expensive, are perfect for those who prefer a full fabric bed when lounging.

How to hang - Heavy-duty steel end hardware should accompany your hammock for hanging safely.

"This is the area at which most of the weight is placed on a hammock and the heavier the gauge steel, the longer the life in the outdoors," says Laurie Rudd, marketing director for The HammockSource, manufacturers of Hatteras Hammocks and The Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock.

"Also make sure the structure from which you are hanging the hammock will hold the weight you plan to place in the hammock."

Hammock stands also are available in case you can't find two perfectly positioned trees.

How to accessorize - Accessories to enhance your relaxation include hammock pillows, wheel kits, canopies, drink holders, storage bags, and portable tree straps.

How to care - Quality hammocks are built for long life in the outdoors and easy clean up. A mild soap solution removes most outdoor dirt and keeping it out of direct sunlight and rain whenever possible also will give you years of enjoyment.

How to relax - Believe it or not, getting into a hammock can sometimes be tricky. Backing up to the mid-section of the hammock and sitting into the center before lifting your legs to lie down is the safest manner. The "rest" is up to you.
