Easily transform your home inside and out

A decorative acrylic block insert can make a dull door exquisite.

Ready to turn your drab-looking exterior door into a showpiece? Try a fast and easy do-it-yourself project from Hy-Lite Products.

A new one-piece exterior door insert made of decorative acrylic blocks in a sturdy aluminum frame makes it easy to bring light into the home and transform the look of your entryway. Best of all, you can tackle the project in less than an hour.

The weather-resistant doorlight inserts come in both 22-inch by 70-inch and 28-inch by 70-inch sizes and fill a large portion of exterior doors with acrylic blocks. The obscure nature of the blocks hides whatever is on the other side of the door and protects homeowner privacy, and allows light to travel through the insert unit and into the home.

"Acrylic blocks are a terrific way to add light, privacy and decorative style to a home," says Don Zeman, host of the nationally syndicated home improvement radio show "Homefront with Don Zeman." "I can't imagine an easier project that quickly transforms the look of both the interior of a room and the exterior of a home. I've installed this acrylic block insert myself, so I know the value it brings to a home."

Configurations of three or four blocks across by 11 blocks vertically are available in the exterior doorlights. The lightweight units - which are up to 70 percent lighter in weight than installed glass blocks - come completely pre-assembled in sturdy frames and require no additional reinforcements to door jambs. When installing, a bead of sealant is placed between the door and the frame.

"Suddenly a homeowner can transform a $25 standard slab or panel door into a showpiece," says Zeman. "Nothing beats adding the flow of natural sunlight into a kitchen, mud room or porch area. This doorlight kit does that while protecting your privacy, so you get the best of all worlds."

Available in a variety of block patterns and colors, including Frosted Wave, Clear Wave, Clear Cross Rib, Green and Frosted Green Wave, the door insert units are constructed of hermetically sealed 6-inch square blocks to help prevent internal condensation.
